Why Your THCA Cartridge Battery Dies Faster in Winter (And How to Fix It)

Every winter I have the same argument with myself: is my battery actually dying, or is it just cold outside? Turns out it’s mostly the second one, and once I figured that out, half my “my cart is broken” panic went away.

Lithium batteries lose charge faster in the cold — it’s not specific to vapes, your phone does the same thing on a freezing morning. What was actually happening every December was that I’d leave my THCA cart in my coat pocket or the car, the battery would get cold, and it would read as nearly dead even though it had plenty of charge left once it warmed back up.

The fix ended up being embarrassingly simple: keep it in an inside pocket, close to your body, instead of an outer one. I also stopped leaving it in the car overnight, which I used to do constantly and which is honestly rough on any battery, not just cannabis vapes.

The other thing nobody tells you is that cold oil gets thick. If your hits are suddenly weak and sputtery in winter, it’s not necessarily the coil — it might just be the oil not vaporizing properly because it’s too cold to flow right. Warming the cartridge in your hands for thirty seconds before you hit it makes a bigger difference than people expect.

I went through this whole troubleshooting spiral for two winters before a friend who’d worked at a dispensary explained it to me in about ninety seconds. I’ve since tried a couple of different THCA carts side by side in cold weather, and the ones with slightly thinner oil formulations handle it noticeably better than the syrupy ones.

I also used to think I had to fully charge it before every session, which isn’t really true and just wastes time standing around waiting. What matters more in winter is where you store it between uses, not how full the battery reads. I keep a spare battery pack in my bag now too, mostly for road trips, since car chargers and freezing temperatures are not a combination I trust anymore.
